About the Author
   
             
  Elise Lemire is a Doris and Carl Kempner Distinguished Professor of Literature at Purchase College, the State University of New York, where she specializes in race and culture in the northeastern United States.  
 
Raised two miles from Walden Pond, in Lincoln, Massachusetts, Professor Lemire holds degrees from Yale (BA 1986) and Rutgers (PhD 1996). She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, and the American Antiquarian Society.
 
 
Professor Lemire’s first book,“Miscegenation”: Making Race in America, was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2002 and was
re-released in paperback in 2009.

The author of Black Walden lives in Westchester County, New York, with her husband and their son.
